Attachment styles and personality disorders in young people

Personality, development of personality and personal patterns which grow up abnormally are often studied in literature of psychology. Attachment theory, proposed by Bolwby, is a development theory which explains lifetime developments of personality and interpersonal relationships. The goal of this study is to observe the connection between adult attachment styles and personality disorders in Turkish sample. During the study, 773 students (511 girls (% 66.1), 262 boys (%33.9) from different universities around Aydın providence participated creating statistical data. Participants? attachment styles and personality disorders are measured with Experiences in Close Relationship Inventory-II (ECR-II) and ICD-10 Personality test, respectively. Statistical data are collected by self reporting of participants. After analysis of collected statistical data, prevalence of attachments styles and personality disorders, relationship between attachment styles and personality disorders are investigated. Based on results of analysis, it was found that insecurely attached person with more preoccupied and fearful has higher personality disorders. Also positive relationship between insecure attachment and personality disorders is found but no difference is observed between male and female attachments. Also personality disorders level of male and female participants shows no significance.Key Words: Attachment Theory , attachment styles, personality disorders
