Religion and value tendencies of university students

The aim of this study was to investigate the religiosity and value orientations of higher education students at Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University. In this research, it was tried to determine the religiosity levels of university students, the level of adoption of values and their relationship with each other by survey method. For this purpose, a sample group consisting of 670 students selected by simple random method among the students from different faculties of RTEU was formed. "Schwartz Value Scale" was used to determine students' value orientations and "Islamic Religiosity Scale was used to determine their religiosity levels. The data collected within the scope of the research were analyzed by using SPSS (parametric tests, independent groups t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Brown-Forsythe test and correlation analysis). Scheffe and Tamhane tests were used for multiple comparisons between the groups. It was found that the mean score of the belief subscale of religiosity was highest and the social subscale was the lowest. In addition, security value takes the first place in the students' orientation to adopt individual level value types; It was observed that the values of hedonism and excitation were in the last rank.It was determined that the students had higher meaning to Self Transcendence (Kindness, Universalism) value group and lower value to Self Improvement (Power, Success, Hedonism) Value group. In the study, it was determined that there were statistically significant differences between the mean scores of students in some sub-dimensions of value orientation according to gender, type of high school graduated, faculty and father's education level. According to the variables of gender, age, family income, faculty, mother and father education level, statistically significant differences were found between the mean scores of students in some sub-dimensions of religiosity. In addition, a positive, low level and statistically significant relationship was found between students' religiosity levels and value orientations. Furthermore, significant correlations were found between some sub-dimensions of religiosity and value orientation. Keywords: Religion, religiosity, values, university youth
