A research on credit card usage of university students: The case of Fırat University

This research aims to examine the attitudes, behaviors, and the financial impacts of credit card usage among students at Fırat University. Today, credit cards are widely used by a broad spectrum of users, including students, which significantly affects the financial management skills of young adults. In this study, data were collected through surveys conducted among Fırat University students, and these data were analyzed to determine the credit card usage habits, debt levels, and the impact of credit cards on the financial independence of the students. The research results highlight the challenges students face in using credit cards, the responsibilities that come with credit card usage, and the effects of these responsibilities on their academic performance. Additionally, the relationship between the awareness levels of credit card usage and the rates of credit card debt was examined. The findings of the study indicate the need for measures to enhance the financial literacy levels of university students. The study included a total of 399 participants, of whom 60.2% were female and 39.8% were male. The findings reveal that students generally display a measured and balanced attitude toward credit card usage. Among the participants, 46.4% were between the ages of 18 and 20, 49.4% were between 21 and 30, and 4.3% were aged 31 and above. It is observed that individuals' attitudes toward credit card use vary across different dimensions. This diversity indicates that approaches to credit card usage should not be evaluated through a single lens but rather through a holistic perspective encompassing cognitive, emotional, and behavioral components. Attitudes toward credit cards are directly related to individuals' levels of financial knowledge, spending behavior patterns, and risk perception. Research findings show that students generally exhibit a cautious and measured approach to credit card use. In particular, the limited tendency observed in the behavioral dimension suggests a conscious and controlled usage pattern within this group. This indicates that young individuals tend to adopt a more rational financial attitude by avoiding impulsive spending. On the other hand, stronger emotional and anxiety-related tendencies suggest that credit card use may create a certain level of stress and concern among individuals. Considering the role of emotional factors in financial decision-making processes, such reactions are understood to be more pronounced among individuals with lower levels of financial literacy. International studies similarly reveal that emotional and anxiety-driven responses significantly influence borrowing behaviors. Research conducted in Turkey also shows that while students may experience concerns related to credit card use, these concerns have the potential to evolve into more conscious and controlled behavior over time. In this context, enhancing financial awareness is of critical importance in helping individuals achieve both behavioral balance and emotional comfort in their use of credit cards. This research aims to raise awareness of credit card usage among university students and to contribute to helping young adults make more informed financial decisions.
