The relationship between the department and habitus of university students in their career choice

This study examined the habitus of university students that affects their career choices. Their habitus that affects their career interests is addressed in terms of the family they were raised in and their innate temperaments. The dispositions brought in the family environment were examined in terms of the autonomous-relational self-scale and its subgroups as autonomous-separate, relational-dependent and autonomous-relational self-dimensions. The innate temperaments were examined in terms of the personality attitudes scale and its subgroups as perfectionist, helpful, achiever, original, observer, questioner, adventurer, leader and compromising attitudes. In addition, the existence of significant differences in all of the career interests, autonomous-relational self-construal and personality attitudes was examined according to the variables of gender, whether or not to study the profession you want, mother's education level, father's education level, mother's profession type, father's profession type, family income level, department studied, age and place of residence. The research group of this study consists of 377 students, 112 male (29.7%) and 265 (70.3%) female, from Hitit University located in the center of Corum, studying in different faculties and departments. First, the demographic information form was given to the students, then the autonomous-relational self-scale developed by Kağıtçıbaşı (2007), the personality attitudes scale developed by Subaş (2017) and the occupational interest scale questions were asked. The data of the study were analyzed with the SPSS program. T-test, ANOVA, correlation and regression analyses were used in the analysis of the data. When the results are examined, it is seen that there is a positive and significant relationship between the career interest scale and the personality attitudes scale and that there is a significant relationship between the changing subgroups. The autonomous-separate self and the relational-dependent self were significantly associated with the social and enterprising subgroups of the vocational interest scale. When the regression results were examined and the variable effects were examined in detail, it was found that the personality attitudes scale significantly affected the career interest scale, but the autonomous relational self-scale did not significantly affect the career interest scale. In addition, significant findings were obtained in terms of significant differences between variables such as age, gender, mother and father's education levels, mother and father's occupation types, studying the desired profession, family income level, department studied, place of residence and career interests, personality attitudes and self-construal.
