An examination of the relationship of psychological aggression perpetration and victimization with self compassion, guilt and shame among dating college students

The main aim of this study is to investigate the relationship of the psychological aggression perpetration and victimization with self compassion, guilt and shame among university students who are in a romantic relationship. This study was conducted with 247 women, 73 men and in total 300 university students who were in romantic relationship. As a data collection tools; Multidimensional Measure of Emotional Abuse Scale, Self-Compassion Scale, the Trait Shame&Guilt Scale and participant information form which is prepared by researcher were used. The data were collected by the relevant sources. The normality of the collected data was tested. Parametric tests for normally distributed distributions, non-parametric equivalents of parametric tests were used for non-normally distributed distributions. Pearson product-moment correlation analysis, spearman correlation analysis, one-way analysis of variance, kruskal wallis h test, independent sample t test, mann whitney u test were used in these calculations. According to the results of the research, while there is a low level negative relationship between exposure to and perpetrating of psychological aggression and self-compassion, there is no relationship of psychological aggression with guilt and shame. In addition, according to gender, women apply to psychological aggression at a significantly higher level than men. Another result is that exposure to and perpetrating of psychological aggression differs significantly according to the way the partners talk to each other. It was concluded that psychological aggression did not differ significantly according to past relationship experience. The results were discussed considering the relevant literature, and suggestions were made for practitioners and researchers.
