The relationship between breast cancer awareness and breast cancer anxiety among male university students

The Relationship Between Breast Cancer Awareness and Breast Cancer Anxiety Among Male University Students Aim: This study was conducted to examine the relationship between breast cancer awareness and breast cancer anxiety among male university students. Method: This study is descriptive and cross-sectional in nature. The research was conducted face-to-face between May 2024 and April 2025. The population of the study consisted of university students studying at Erzurum Technical University during the specified dates. The sample consisted of 520 male students aged 18 and above, who had no communication problems. Data were collected using a demographic characteristics form, the Breast Cancer Awareness Scale, and the Breast Cancer Anxiety Scale. In the data analysis, percentage, mean, independent samples t-test, One-Way ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and Cohen's d were used. Results: As a result of the study, it was found that the mean score of male students on the Breast Cancer Awareness Scale was 0.68±0.73, while the mean score on the Breast Cancer Anxiety Scale was 6.79±4.73. A weak but positive correlation was identified between the level of breast cancer awareness and the level of anxiety (r=0.115, p=0.009). The results of the regression analysis also revealed that the level of awareness significantly predicted the level of anxiety (β=0.115, p=0.009). Conclusion: As a result of this study, it was determined that male university students had a low level of breast cancer awareness and a moderate level of breast cancer anxiety. In addition, a weak positive correlation was found between breast cancer awareness and breast cancer anxiety among male university students.
