In this study, the diagnostic value of MDCT in the urinary system pathologies was reviewed in the light of the literature. Abdominal and pelvic CT scans of 87 patients who had urinary system pathologies were evaluated. The CT studies were performed from June 2006 to October 2007 at the MDCT unit of the department of radiology in our institution.Urinary system congenital anomalies were determined in 9 of the patients we studied. In 3 cases urinary tract infection findings were shown. Urinary lithiasis was observed in 27 patients. One or more stones were present in the kidneys of 20 patients, in the ureters of 2 patients and in the bladder of 5 patients. Renal mass was determined in 23 patients, bladder mass was observed in 6 patients and one patient had prostatic tumor. Totally 30 patients had urinary system tumors. Thirteen patients had renal mass in the right kidney, 9 patients had renal mass in the left kidney and one had bilateral renal masses. Polycystic kidney disease was present in one patient and parapelvic cyst was observed in another patient. Renal vascular pathologies were observed in 8 patients. Five patients had soft and 2 patients had calcified atherosclerothic plaques in their renal arteries. One of the patients had an aneurismatic dilatation and soft atherosclerotic plaque in the renal artery. In 4 patients with trauma, not only renal contusions and laserations but also secondary findings of trauma were determined.After abdomen and pelvis were scanned in seconds by MDCT, we successfully constituted 2- and 3-dimensional high-resolution images which had important contributions to the diagnosis of urinary pathologies.İn conclusion, we found out that MDCT is an noninvasive, fast and reliable diagnostic method in diagnosis of urinary pathologies such as tumors, urinary lithiasis and renal vascular pathologies and secondary findings of the urinary system diseases.
