Abstract (EN)

Aim: In this study, patients who underwent endoscopic examination because of the gastrointestinal (GIS) tract bleeding, it is aimed to reveal the etiology of the hemorrhage according to age groups. Method: Seventy patients' data presented with the cause of bleeding to Celal Bayar University Faculty of Medicine, Pediatric Gastroenterology Department and endoscopic examination (esophagogastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy) and done between December 2013 to November 2015 were evaluated retrospectively. Findings: The patients (35 female, 35 male) with a mean age of 11 ± 4.8 years (2-17 years), 43 patients (61.4%) were upper GIS bleeding, 27 patients (38.6%) were lower GIS bleeding. Upper GIS bleeding caused by endoscopy patients of 16 (37.3%) were using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or aspirin and that 8 of these patients were between 2-5 years. The average hemoglobin levels of patients was 11.4 ± 2.3 (4.8-16.9) g / dL, the mean hematocrit value was 34.6 ± 7.0 (15-52). Sixteen patients (37.2%) with upper GIS bleeding were positive for H. pylori at histopathological examination. Seven patients (25.9%) with lower GI bleeding were diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease at histopathological examination. One patient with liver cirrhosis died due to esophageal varices bleeding. Conclusion: The NSAIDs are commonly used in childhood can lead to upper gastrointestinal bleeding, even in therapeutic doses. In this respect unnecessary NSAID use should be avoided. One of the major causes of lower GIS bleeding in adolescents should be noted that inflammatory bowel disease.
