Examining the reasons why elite tennis players quit their tennis careers

Abstract (EN)

Despite the increasing interest in tennis, which is one of the sports branches, that is a social institution we are witnessing separation of elit athletes from tennis. The aim of this dissertation is to reveal the reasons for separation of top level athletes from tennis and to examine the reasons. Considering the physical performance level of tennis, especially played at the top level in the world, it has forced human beings, coping with physical, mental and socioeconomic conditions has become harder and their tendency to cessation tennis has increased. As a method, it is planned to use qualitative research method in order to determine athletes experiences in tennis cessation in depth and in multidimension. As data collection tools, individual interviews will be conducted. With the consideration of senior tennis players are being ages of 16 and 30, the number of people to be interviewed was determined as 12. The data obtained in the research will be analyzed by qualitative content analysis method. At thr end of the research, it is seen that some of them want to quit voluntarily and some of them have to leave compulsory in their opinions about the reasons for leaving the tennis. In the opinions of the athletes about the reasons for quitting tennis, it is seen that some of them want to quit tennis voluntarily and some of them have to quit tennis. Accordingly, it was observed that some athletes had to quit tennis because of their health problems, while others had to quit tennis because of their financial conditions and anxiety to fail.
