Past tense in Uyghur Turkish: The example of Kechmish by Halide İsrail

Abstract (EN)

The past tense of Uyghur Turkish is researched in this study. Halide Israel's novel Kechmish is evaluated as the compilation source of the study. The aims of this thesis are to describe the expression of the past tense of Uyghur Turkish and the multifunctional usage of the past tense markers in a comprehensive way, to explore the elements that are effective in determining the time and indicate the relationship between past tense markers and the elements. To achieve these points, the past tense is extensively studied at the level of suffix, word, phrase, sentence and text in detail. Meanwhile, it benefits from discussion of aktionsart, aspect, evidentiality and modality issues. Besides, to support the key topic of past tense, some imperative researches about the event time, speech time and reference time are also included. In the introduction of this thesis, the scope, purpose, significance, materials, methods and limitations are represented. In the first chapter "Overview of Time Concept and the Related Topics about Time", after general information about the real time and time in linguistics, the classification of time, and some works on these subjects have been given, topics of aktionsart, aspect, evidentiality and modality are mentioned with the main line. In the second chapter "The Past Tense of Uyghur Turkish", time suffixes and structures which are composed of time suffixes are analyzed, this chapter consists of these parts: "Suffixes and Structures Marking Past Tense in Verb Clauses", "Usage of Non-Past Tense Markers for Past Tense in Verb Clauses", "Suffixes and Structures Marking Past Tense in Noun Clauses" and "Past Tense Marker Function of Non-Past Tense Forms in Noun Clauses". In the conclusion, the results obtained from the analysis are provided.
