Analysing student learning behaviour from log data in distance education

Thesis, Gazi University Faculty of EducationComputer and Instructional Technologies Teaching ProgrammeSupervisor : Assist.Prof.Dr Nursal ARICISeptember-2006This research which covers surveying the log data of study activities of the students indistance education by analyzing them, The basis aim of this survey is reviewing the studyactivities of the students with computer based instruction in distance education.The survey is implemented by using the log data of the query form which is developed byconsidering the log programme in the project of Distance Education (DE). The main method ofthe survey is cross checking the data of the query form and the log programme. The data of thequery form and the log programme are considered to explaining the findings of the survey.By the results of the survey, the conclusions about the module students who participate toDE are below:• The students show different studying characteristics when no synchronouseducation is applied.• The studying frequencies of the students differs before an exam or a similaractivity.• Analyzing the behaviors of the students provides fore information in order toplanning and developing computer based education materials.• A result is shown that Students are interested in the activities with the computerrunning log programme.• The students stimulate about the needs of the reviewing the methods of theexecution of the log programme.• It appears that the students expect chat rooms, discussion groups, forums andcontacting with the education stuff by online and sometimes face-to-face during the educationperiod.
