Investigation of the effects of long, medium and short chain fatty acids on nesfatin, omentin, adropin, leptin and ghrelin levels

There are many studies on nesfatin-1, omentin, adropin, leptin and ghrelin. However data on the effects of long, medium and short chain fatty acids on serum/tissue concentrations of nesfatin-1, omentin, adropin, leptin and ghrelin in blood are scarce. This study aims to investigate the effects of combined use of butyric acid, caprylic acid and oleic acid on nesfatin-1, omentin, adropin, leptin and ghrelin secretion. Forty-nine male Wistar rats were used in the study. The rats were randomly divided into 7 subgroups as control group, butyric acid group, caprylic acid group, oleic acid group, butyric acid+caprylic acid group, butyric acid+oleic acid group, and caprylic acid+oleic acid group. Fatty acid was administered orally for 21 days. At the end of the study, nesfatin-1, omentin, adropin, leptin and ghrelin levels of serum samples taken from rats were determined by the ELISA method.When the groups were compared in terms of nesfatin-1, omentin, adropin, leptin and ghrelin levels, it was seen that the nesfatin-1, omentin, adropin, leptin and ghrelin levels of the butyric acid group were higher than the other groups. When the groups were examined in more detail, it was determined that the post-experiment average weight values of the control group were statistically higher than the pre-experiment average weight values. No statistically significant difference was found in the other groups. As a result, it was observed that the use of butyric acid may cause an increase in serum protein levels, but it did not have a significant effect on weight loss.
