Abstract (EN)
The advancement in recent miniaturized devices and systems has caused a rapid growth of the microscale fluidic systems in different fields. In such designs, one of the substantial problems is the requirement for a tiny amount of fluid transportation in microscale channels. In this thesis, a valveless micropump working with magnetic nanofluid is designed and controlled. The design can be a potential solution for fluid transportation in both biomedical and electronics cooling devices. For this purpose, the properties of magnetic nanofluid, i.e., viscosity, magnetization capability, and thermal conductivity are investigated. A permanent magnetic actuator (PMA) is designed to ensure a valveless actuation for the micropump. Then, a microchannel unit is designed and manufactured. By integrating the PMA with the microchannel unit, a valveless micropump system is built. Following, the magnetic nanofluid flow inside the valveless micropump is investigated both numerically and experimentally while the PMA is stationary. To test the performance of the valveless micropump, the flow is also investigated by varying PMA speed. The results of performance tests indicated that the fluid velocity increases up to a specific PMA speed, then it becomes to decrease. Finally, closed-loop control is implemented to control the fluid flow. A real-time image processing strategy is developed to determine the real-time magnetic nanofluid velocity. Then, a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller is implemented. The results revealed that it is possible to control magnetic nanofluid flow by the PID controller for a given reference velocity.
