ABSTRACT Master Thesis STUDY ON THE AERATION PERFORMANCE OF WATER JET WHICH IS FORMED BY A VENTURI DEVICE ŞerminKOÇYİ?ÎT Fırat University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Civil Engineering 2004, Page : 94 Dissolved oxygen, is one of the most important parameters of water quality. When the critical velocity exceeds the plunging jet velocity, the water jets increase the levels of the amount of dissolved oxygen with air bubbles which entrained into the water. It is necessary to aerate of water in order to increase the amount of dissolved oxygen in water. Gas entrainment by plunging liquid jets is frequently met in practice. In particular, due to favorably energy requirement, jet aerators have potential application in many chemical, fermentation and waste treatment processes. Plunging liquid jets also have an interesting application in flotation processes. Water jets are used efficiently either in increase of the amount of dissolved oxygen in water or in aeration of water. In this study, the efficiency of oxygen transfer and performance of aeration were investigated experimentally by using venturi nozzles which have air holes at the throat portion. In the first section; the purpose of this study with its contents was explained and its advantages and importance were accented. In the second section; the articles, related to this study, were investigated and presented. In the third section; the knowledge was given about the gas transfer which is one of the most important events in water jets. In the fourth section; mechanisms, types and features of water jets and venturi devices, were presented in detail. In the fifth section; the experimental setup and the materials which were used in experiments were presented with figures. In the sixth section; the results obtained from the study were presented and interpreted. And also in the seventh section; the conclusions and suggestions were presented. Key words: Water jet, Venturi, Aeration, Oxygen transfer, Penetration depth, Nozzle XI
