Reconstruction of contemporary design concepts in the context of Venturi?s approach on complexity and contradiction

Proposing rigid systems for the development of contemporary design is similar to an attempt to solve topology problems with the help of Euclidian geometry. Contemporary solution-focused pursuits can be the trigger of such development. In this thesis, flexible, changeable, and hybrid approaches to design -rather than limiting it with laws, principles and methods- are proposed to be the realm of reconstruction in design.Design needs a new, rich vocabulary in which predetermined macro totalities dissolve into micro units; laws, methods and principles leave their place to designer?s realm of responsible freedom; and a transformation takes place from bound variables to the conceptual, from exactness to ambiguity. The design concepts explored in this thesis are proposed as the means of development of such vocabulary.The key source of reconstruction of design concepts in this work is Robert Venturi?s book Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture. After a thorough analysis of the entire book, a frame of intense texts and concepts are reconstructed. As the practical aspect, three constitutive concepts in the book, duality, inflection, and equal combinations are transformed into three derived concepts, i.e. twin, surflexion, and structural continuity; and design opportunities emerging from them are implemented.Keywords: Contemporary design, Design concepts, Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture.
