The analysis of the dramatical and the musical structure of desdemona's "Salce" aria in Verdi's opera Othello and a model performance

Özet (EN)

In this study, the opera Otello, among the later works of the famous 19th century Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi, is dramaturgically analyzed by focusing on the lead female character Desdemona and including other characters. The performance report is included at the end of the study in addition to the chapters presented below. In the first chapter, the composer's understanding of art, his creative periods demonstrating the development of his career, and his contribution to the history of world opera are examined through the guidance of his music life since childhood and the pivotal works he had contributed to the opera literature. In the second chapter, addressing Shakespeare's Otello, the opera Otello is examined with respect to the criteria of form, substance, theme, controversy and antagonism as well as character analysis. The plotline of the opera are examined, including the specification of the arias and ensemble part. In the third chapter, psychological and sociological analyses of the character Desdemona and the review of the dramatic, structural and musical components of aria "Salce" which will be performed are conducted. In the fourth chapter which consists of the application report, the structural, musical and dramatic evaluation of the compositions which will be performed at the graduation recital, including "Salce" aria, are presented.
