Trade in Abbasids between VIII-X century

Keywords: Islamic History, Abbasids, Medieval Trade, Middle East,, Middle Ages The Abbasids bad a very important role in the Medieval Islamic World. Between Vlllth. and Xth, the success of the Abbasids, which brought about a remarkably developed civilization, was depending on extremely realistic and rational policies they pursued in governmental administration and economical life. In this study, we tried to bring up the economical side of this developed civilization created by the Abbasids. Naturally, in the Medieval Islamic World the Abbasids had a great importance in respect to both its frontiers and the period it carried on its rule. For this reason, as a research issue, we studied the period of main development phase of the Abbasids trade extending from the first half of the 8th century to the beginning of the 9th century. In this period, state frontiers were largely permeable contrary to the way known today. Nevertheless, the frontiers of the Abbasids showed great changes throughout this period. Because of this reason, in this study, avoiding to research strictly the trade within the Abbasid frontiers, we also include the commercial life of the regions that were under the influence of the Abbasids. In this study, we researched the Abbasids' trade in two chapters. In the first chapter, we initially tried to explain the meaning of the 'trade' concept under the title of 'the Abbasids' trade between the 8th century and the 9th century'. In the following, we studied the viewpoint of Islam, widely believed in the Abbasid Dynasty's frontiers, on trade. On the other hand, in the following of this issue we tried to explain the development carried by trade in Islamic World until the period of the Abbasid Dynasty. In the second part of our study, after explaining the features of various open markets and bazaars set up in the Abbasid cities, we studied goods exchanging in trade. In the third section, I tried to explain Abbasi Government's economical and financial structure, banking and affects of money and trade in social life which is entitled "Economic structure of Abbasi government". Finally, we studied the roads of transportation of goods by sea and land in two parts. In conclusion, we evaluated the general view of commercial life in the Abbasid' s period. V
