Abstract (EN)

Fear, one of the most powerful human emotions, has been expressed in various forms in all works of art from past to present. Throughout the history of humanity, it can be said that fear corresponds to different fields in different ages in relation to time, space and the human / society experiencing it. In this respect, one of the sharpest breaks was experienced in the modernization process. Cinema, which is the art of the modern era, produced the most contemporary works in which the horrors evoked by modernity are visible, especially in the Weimar Germany after the First World War, a unique period emerged in Berlin where the art of cinema and the aesthetics of horror intersect. The purpose of this study is to make an analysis from the perspective of the aesthetics of horror of German films produced in this period, thus exploring the projections of the relations between modernity, modernism and horror in the art of cinema. In the name of drawing the outline of a cinematic horror aesthetics, as a result of the analysis proceeding over the aesthetic categories such as gothic, monster, sublime, terror, fantastic, evil and uncanny and the films are examined in terms of both stylistic / formal and narrative / contextual aspects, a historical, social, cultural interpretation of the aesthetics of horror was made in Weimar Cinema.
