Abstract (EN)

The concept of individuality and identity has always been influenced by gender identity. The one-sided perception of identity is being questioned in numerous ways throughout the postmodern age. Self-identification is the condition that comes with a distinct identity, a completely realized sense of self. One of the main issues with literature reaching its maximum effectiveness throughout the the whole ages especially for women, has been this sense. With the aid of a diverse philosophical structure enhanced with a different perspective derived from the ideas pervasive around debates regarding feminism, gender issues, and the deconstrucing stereotypical gendered identities, this thesis investigates how Churchill challenges gender norms in her sharply original plays. The two chosen plays are analyzed to comprehend how Caryl Churchill addresses the issue of female identity. Her prominent works, Top Girls and Cloud Nine, are focused since they express the subjective sides of feminine figures' identity in different ways. This thesis also highlights the difference between sex and gender by referring to Butler's performativity of gender. The main purpose of this study is to display how the repressive performativity of gender, and sexual identities work in the patriarchal atmosphere and how it can be subverted in the late twentieth-century.
