"Jerusalem" in the travelogue of Abbot Daniil, the pioneer of XII. century Russian pilgrimage literature

This thesis is focused on the study of one of the most important problems of cultural monuments of the Russian Middle Ages - the study of the heritage of Christian culture. Although many medieval texts of the so-called Old Russian literature have been able to reappear and have the right to be analysed, they are an important material for cultural monuments and need to be studied scientifically. The first important documents in Russian literature are chronicles and travelogues. The first information about holy places is found in Russian medieval travelogues. The Middle Ages, with its specific religious phenomena, is an important period in developing scientific problems related to the preservation and transmission of "pre-museum" cultural property. The most important factor in the preservation of artifacts of that period was the emphasis on the origins of the spiritual heritage, which determined the consistent interest in monuments in the Holy Land and other Christian centers. This thesis analyses the chapters of "The Life and Journey of Abbot Daniil from the Russian Lands" that deal with the Mediterranean geography and the Russian pilgrimage tradition in the Middle Ages. Through the life and travels of Abbot Daniil, the information in the work will be examined in detail to understand the importance and interactions of the Mediterranean region in the cultural, social, and religious context of the Middle Ages. In addition, the characteristics and interactions of the Russian pilgrimage tradition in this period will be analyzed, focusing on how Abbot Daniil lived and adopted this tradition. In this study, the cultural interaction between the medieval Mediterranean geography and Russia and the role of the pilgrimage tradition will be examined in an interdisciplinary manner from a historical perspective. In the first part of the study, the names and political history of Jerusalem, the most sacred city of the Mediterranean, will be given in the historical process and its importance for the three Abrahamic religions will be discussed. The second part will discuss the history of the travelogue genre in medieval Russian literature. Apart from Jerusalem, the histories of travels to Constantinople, Aynoroz, and Sinai, the most popular pilgrimage destinations, will be discussed. In the third part of the study, the work "The Life and Journey of Abbot Daniil from the Russian Lands" will be examined in detail and a brief description of the author's vague biography, which unfortunately almost disappeared in the hazy past of the Middle Ages, will be made.
