illumination features of three hand-written Works belonging to 16th century (Suleimanie Library, Ismihan Sultan 337/1 ? Pertevniyal 2- Sultan Ahmed 24)

The art works produced in the period of the opulent culture and art atmosphere of 16th century, which was the most prosperous and strongest time of Ottoman Empire, created the birth of classical period. 16th century is a period of time when perfect examples of illumination art which decorates the pages of handwritten works ?primarily Quran- were given.The works we chose from Suleimanie Library which are catalogued as İsmihan Sultan 337, Pertevniyal 2 and Sultan Ahmed 24 are the artworks which can exemplify the characteristic features of that period. The first one of the works refers to the Persian literature and named as Kenü?r Rumuz. The other two works are Qurans.In the introduction part, in general terms, the aim and significance of the topic and explanations regarding the method are given. The Thesis is composed of three parts. In the first part, in the part titled ?Turkish Book Arts in 16th Century? under the main title of ?Turkish Book Arts and Illumination in 16th Century?; Calligraphy, The Art of Paper Filigree Cut, Binding Art are described briefly, and in the part titled ?Illumination Art?, the general terms of illumination art are clarified.In the second part, these three works are arranged to form a catalog according to the dates they were copied. In the cataloguing process, the information about work number, chapter name, copy date, topic, dimensions (outer dimension, internal dimension), number of pages, line count, font type, editor and binding features are provided. Subsequently, starting from the binding features of the works, the sample illuminated pages are catalogued individually and the designs of the pages are examined in terms of features of pattern and color. In the third part, three original applications are applied as ?zahriye? illumination, page edge (margin) illumination and heading illumination.In conclusion, it is noticed once again when the illuminations are examined that the art of illumination was applied regarding some rules and it underwent some periodical changes in sense of color, pattern and application styles and made progress.
