Abstract (EN)
Ottoman Empire first captured a wide area of Morean Peninsula during the reign of Mehmed II (1451-1481) and established dominance in its port cities during the reign of Bayezid II (1481-1512) and Süleyman I (1520-1566) after wars with the Venetian Republic. First crucial conflicts with Maniots, a native Greek group in the south of the peninsula, came into existence during the Cyprus War under Selim II, and these conflicts evolved as numerous uprisings in the next century. In the first quarter of XVII. century, Maniots developed bilateral relations with European noblemen, such as Pedro-Tellez Giron, the Spanish Viceroy of Sicily, and Charles Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua to revolt against the Ottoman Empire. Maniot revolts during the Cretan Wars caused Köprülüzade Fazıl Ahmed Pasha to govern the area with the hand of a Maniot corsair, Limberaki Gerakari, but this process did not provide a permanent solution for the Ottomans. After the Ottoman defeat of Vienna in 1683, Venetians took the opportunity to take revenge for the Creten Wars, chose Morea as their target, and collaborated with Maniots again. This research deals with Maniot revolts of XVII. century, their international aids, and relations with Ottomans as well as banditry activity in the peninsula. Mühimme and Mühimme Zeyli Registers in Ottoman Archives and Turkish and Italian chronicles had been shed some light on this paper.
