An evaluation of vocabulary teaching practice in foreign language classroom from the aspect of pedagogical application

In recent years, greater importance is attached to teaching vocabulary. There aredifferent methods and sights about language teaching. Modern language teaching methodsaccept the importance of teaching vocabulary and there are numerous studies, research andexperiments on this field.In this study, the historical development of vocabulary teaching is summarized inrelation with various language teaching methods. While learning vocabulary, alongside the L1equivalents of the words, we also learn many other things related to the vocabulary. Differentaspects of knowing a word are mentioned in our study.Another important issue is which words to teach. Under this heading, we tried to findanswers to such questions as; `How many words are there in English??, `How many words donative speakers know?? or `Which words to teach??. Learning a word also containsremembering and using the target vocabulary when necessary. Learning and rememberingprocesses of vocabulary is a recurrent issue which has been mentioned in this study. Also weexamined different vocabulary teaching techniques and ways of assessing vocabulary.In a teaching application, we measured the effectiveness of a de-contextualizedvocabulary teaching technique. The results revealed the effectiveness of the technique whichwere parallel to some previous studies.Key Words: Language Teaching, Teaching Vocabulary
