The effect of mobile hypermedia supported printed materials in foreign language learning on vocabulary learning and motivation

Properties of mobile devices such as accessibility, mobility and personalizationhave a big potential for students in activities and practices outside the classroom and these properties may provide various benefits for children. There are few researches about mobile phone usage in foreign language learning with these potentials. There is almost no research about using mobile phones to extend students? vocabulary knowledge. The main purpose of this research is to make the teaching and learning processes more effective and efficient with using mobile phone technology. This research aims to bring out the potential of mobile phone usage in English language learning and search the effects of mobile phones on language learning. Participants are students from Gazi University Foreign Language Teaching Department in Ankara. Qualitative data is used to support the quantitative data findings in this research. Qualitative and quantitative data is analyzed with hybrid methods. Quantitative findings are analyzed with two factored ANOVA for mixed researches. Qualitative findings are analyzed with pattern analysis. Pre-test post-test experimental design with control group has been used in quantitative research part. Semi-structured interviews have been done with students and students answered to open-ended questions in an evaluation survey. Mobile supported printed material and only printed material has been compared in order to find which one is effective to learn the same vocabulary content. The quantitative data findings showed that mobile phone usage has a positive effect on vocabulary learning. Findings from interviews and surveys also support this result. All participants gave positive feedbacks about the vocabulary learning application used on mobile phone.
