The Role and importance of translation in foreign language

m ABSTRACT In this study, which is made up of introduction, conlusion and ten chapters, it has been tried to determine the role and importance of translation in language teaching in Turkey in general and the contibution of tranlation to teaching German in partikular. In the introduction section the importance, purpose and scope of the study have been mentioned and the in the first chapter various definitions of translation and a general introduction to the topic have been given. Afterwards, the following subjects have been examined in order: -Translation has been examined 4 groups including pre-historic, middle age, renessaince-reformation and romantic eras in terms of its historical development. -The synonym in translation and its importance have been mentioned. -Translation types were examined in 4 group: word-to-word translation, grammar translation, informaitonal translation and communicational translation. -It has been tried to draw the limitations of the general objektives of teaching translation and it has also been pointed out that this is necessary. -Possible translation problems have been given by mentioning teaching translation with the purpose of foreign language. -The role and importance of translation in foreign language teaching have been examined in different aspects. -The grammar-translation method, whic has been used for years but guite criticised, has been told and it has been explained that it also has useful sides by giving examples. -The attention was particularly taken to the importance of the subject through explaining serious problems during translation process such as lack of using a dictionary, failing in using foreign language logic, ignoring unity of the subject and metaphorical expressions. In the light of the above mentioned information, a short interview has been done with a lecture who has experience in translation.IV In the conclusion, a general rewiew of the study has been done and explanations have been given about the results obtained.
