Özet (EN)

Many different approaches and methods have been developed in order to address the needs of foreign language learners in the 20th century. Each of these approaches and methods were developed in a dialectical fashion. Each approach, while trying to cater to the short-comings of a previous one, has paved the way for another new approach because of its own weaknesses. With an eclectic view point, teachers can make use of the strengths of various methods, and the prerequisite for a successful eclectic approach is to make informed decisions while choosing between different methods and approaches. This study is aimed at helping those teachers who wish to incorporate translation and the Internet into their eclectic approach in making informed choices. The main objective of the study is to investigate the effectiveness of using the Internet during translation from Turkish to English as a tecnique for teaching English as a foreign language. Providing learners with the means which will make them capable of reaching information in different ways and thus making them more autonomous learners is among the secondary objectives of the study. The study is of a quasi-experimental nature based on a pretest-posttest design. Students studying at Izmir University of Economics are involved in the study. 4 groups of students are randomly selected from 120 students, who have successfully passed an achievement test at the completion of Pre-Intermediate level, in order to form four classes in the Intermediate level (E1=20, E2=20, C1=20, C2=20).An analytical scoring rubric, which has been developed by the researcher, has been used in the study. The device is estimated to have a Pearson Correlation of 0,80.The experimental group has received training designed in line with Computer Assissted English Language Teaching principles for 7 weeks whereas the control group received a traditional training. As part of the data analysis, the normal distribution of the data has been computed via skewness coefficient value, and through the use of a writing syllabus based on the principles of Computer Assissted English Language Teaching, the necessary writing skills has been taught to the members of the experimental group while the control group received instruction on writing skills through traditional methods. The F-test was employed to ascertain that the two groups were equally successful at the beginining of the study. At the end of the experimental process, One-Way ANOVA for Repeated Measures was used to test the effectiveness of the experimental intervention (Bonate, 2000; Büyüköztürk, 2007; Tabacknick ve Fidell, 2001). The significance level of the study has been found to be 0,05.The study found that the experimental intervention was significantly effective in terms of improving learners? ability in the levels of coherence and cohesion, lexis and grammar.
