A study to create A1 level idiom set for Turkish as a foreign language

It is important to integrate idioms, quotes, and proverbs that convey the culture of the target language into the content of foreign language courses and textbooks. When cultural competence begins with idioms at the basic level of the foreign language, learners are better able to internalize the culture of the target language and learn more successfully. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages suggests that idioms at the basic level should be very limited, memorized, situation-specific, and simple, used daily, refer to some concrete situations, used continuously, and short. The aim of this study is to create an idiom set at A1 level for Turkish as a foreign language. For this purpose, "Gazi TÖMER A1 Coursebook and Workbook, İstanbul Yabancılar İçin Türkçe A1 Coursebook and Workbook, TÖMER Yeni Hitit Yabancılar İçin Türkçe A1 Coursebook and Workbook, and Yedi İklim Türkçe A1 Coursebook and Workbook" are selected as research materials. 179 idioms are determined after the searching of the research materials. A rubric was prepared with these idioms for the opinions of the experts in the field of teaching Turkish as a foreign language (N:48). As a result of the data the average score of each idiom was determined. The idioms are ranked from the highest mean score to the lowest mean score and thus, an idiom set was created for the A1 level for Turkish as a foreign language.
