Text adaptation for listening skill in teaching Turkish as a foreign language

In foreign language teaching, authentic texts are of great importance for both learners and teachers and are frequently used. In cases where they don't fully meet the requirements despite their many contributions, text adaptation processes are applied on the authentic texts in order to reduce their negative qualities and increase their advantageous aspects, thus increasing the efficiency obtained from them. In the literature reviews, it is observed that the authentic texts used in foreign language teaching are mostly adapted for reading skills, while listening skills are generally neglected. In this study, listening and reading skills were comprehensively compared, the stages of text adaptation were examined in detail, and two stories of Sabahattin Ali, named Sırça Köşk (Glass Palace) and Beyaz Bir Gemi (A White Ship), were adapted for learners of Turkish as a foreign language at A2 and B2 language levels. Adaptation processes, which benefit from Krashen's comprehensible input theory and the proven recommendations of some important researchers, are explained in detail so that Turkish as a foreign language teachers may also benefit. All adapted texts produced at the end of the study were put into service in a way that learners and instructors can benefit from.
