Abstract (EN)

In today's multicultural world, learning foreign languages is increasingly in demand in order to communicate effectively and appropriately with members of other cultures. Effective intercultural communication requires intercultural sensitivity, knowledge of cultural aspects, intercultural interaction as well as proficiency in language skills. Therefore, in this study, teaching Turkish as a foreign language was addressed in a integrated manner with the dimensions of reading comprehension skills, reading motivation and intercultural sensitivity. The main purpose of this study is to examine the effect of text-handling processes prepared for authentic literary texts based on an intercultural approach on students' reading comprehension skills, reading motivation and intercultural sensitivities. The study was created according to the non-equivalent comparison group design of the quantitative research based quasi-experimental research method. The research process consists of the steps of determining the research purpose, creating data collection tools and text-handling activities, selecting the study group, performing text processing and data collection applications for the study, analyzing and interpreting the data and making inferences. In this direction, the study was conducted with 40 C1 level foreign students at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University Language Education Application and Research Center. Within the scope of the study, opinions were taken from 6 different field experts about authentic texts belonging to 6 different literary genres (story, poem, travel writing, letter, memory and short play), which are suitable for the development of reading comprehension skills, reading motivation and intercultural sensitivities, and as a result of the opinions stated, 2 texts of all kinds text-handling activities based on an intercultural approach to a total of 12 authentic literary texts were prepared. These activities are organized in a way that activates the existing cultural schemes of the students and interacts with the texts and with each other. The research was conducted in the experimental and control groups in C1 level for 6 weeks. The pre-tests and post-tests of the research were applied at the beginning and the end of the C1 course. The data obtained from the pre-test and post-tests of the study were analyzed with the SPSS 22.0 package program. The results of the study showed that a language teaching process conducted with authentic literary texts based on an intercultural approach had a significant positive effect on students' reading comprehension skills, reading motivation and intercultural sensitivity. Based on the results of the research, inferences for research and application have been made.
