Abstract (EN)
Today, people have started to feel the need of learning a second foreign language, regardless of where they live, whatever workthey are dealing with, within the scope of many different needs. Thanks to the changing world order, developing technology and increasing opportunities, Turkey has taken placeamong the countries that have started to globalise quickly. At this point, studies on teaching Turkish as a second language have started to emergeand thesestudies are making progress rapidly. A society that speaks a common language shares a common culture, too. A common geography, a common history, common values, common traditions, common beliefsand many more things create the phenomenon which we call culture. Through language, this phenomenon strengthens its place among those people, just as a tree takes root in the soil and cling to the soil, and is transmitted from generation to generation. Foreign language teaching is a field that concomitantly brings cultural transmission phenomenon into the forefront. While learning a foreign language, we cannot say a productive process has been undergone by absorbing only the grammatical structures of that language. While learning a foreign language, it is necessary to learn the values, life style, way of thinking and perspective on life of society which that language belongs to. To learn a new language brings totally new perspectives and ensures thinking richness to that who learns it and it paves the way for emerging tolerant individuals against different culture and thoughts. Textbooks that are used for foreign language teaching are basic equipments, so materials which are prepared for this purpose should have necessary content, especially in terms of beingable to realise cultural transmission. In the process of teaching Turkish as a foreign language, what is expected from these books is to reflect Turkish culture in a way that befits its richness. In this study, Istanbul University Turkish Teaching Set B1, B2, C+ books were examinedon the purpose of determining how cultural transmission is done with texts in teaching Turkish as a foreign language, and the proficiency level of these books in terms of cultural elements was tried to be determined.
