Using cartoons in teaching Turkish to foreigners: The case of Smurfs

People naturally need to communicate with each other. Thanks to the communication they establish with each other, they develop themselves and have a place in life. Language is the only thing that allows people to communicate. Language is a form of agreement woven with different and multiple voices, enabling people to understand each other and express themselves to other people. Language helps people to express their feelings, thoughts and ideas, to communicate and socialize with the outside world, and to transfer their experiences to the next generations. Due to such important reasons, language and mental skills training begins at an early age in modern world states and states attach great importance to these trainings. In the 21st century world, especially in Europe, the understanding of "multi-language instead of one language" has started to gain popularity. As a result of this, the importance of foreign language education in our country is increasing day by day. Due to the developments in the world, the policies implemented and the decisions of political actors, the foreign population in our country has increased considerably in the last ten years. As a result of this, the interest in learning Turkish has increased among foreigners who come to our country, and this has led to an increase in Turkish teaching materials in order to teach Turkish more easily and accurately. As we have seen in many examples in the world, the main source of Turkish teaching is textbooks. Four basic language skills, cultural transfer and unit standards are of great importance for the correct conduct of language education. Textbooks, which have a great place in the formal education process of the students, have the same importance in foreign language education. Grammar is a holistic element that examines the sound, shape and sentence structures of the language and determines the relationships between them. Grammar structures can be called as the handling of the rules that create the language in parts. The competent use of a language is based on a complete command of grammatical structures. Grammar structures are taught through limited materials in teaching Turkish to foreigners. Presenting the grammatical structures of a language in an audio-visual material will contribute to the student in terms of pronunciation, correct pronunciation and use in context, as well as having raw information. In this study, an answer will be sought to the question of whether cartoons can be used in teaching Turkish as a foreign language. When looking at the publications and researches related to the survey method, it was concluded that there are deficiencies in the content of materials in teaching Turkish as a foreign language and that the types of materials are not sufficient.. In order to save the learning environment from monotony, audio-visual materials should also be included. In this direction, content analysis of the sections will be made and their suitability for the levels will be checked in order to use the cartoon called "Smurfs" as a material in teaching Turkish to foreigners. In this direction, in order to use the cartoon called Smurfs as a material in teaching Turkish to foreigners, the content analysis of the sections will be made based on the grammar structures of the A2, C1 levels of the New Istanbul Students Course Book and their suitability will be checked.
