Vocabulary of reading books used in teaching Turkish to foreigners: PIKTES example of Turkish Stories Set For Foreign Students

Words, which form the basis of language, are also the main tools of interaction between people. For this reason, words are emphasized in language teaching. Because knowing a language means knowing the words of that language in a way. From this point of view, words are studied in both mother tongue teaching and foreign language teaching. Especially in foreign language teaching, questions such as which words will be taught at which language level, which words should be given priority and how many words will be taught are the basic questions that researchers focus on. Frequency studies are carried out to answer these questions. Frequency studies; These are scientific studies that provide data on the questions mentioned in foreign language teaching. With this aspect, frequency studies are carried out in order to put language teaching in general and vocabulary teaching in particular on a scientific basis rather than performing it randomly. Frequency studies are used to teach Turkish to foreigners on a scientific basis, and these frequency studies are mostly on textbooks. However, reading books have become a material that is frequently used in teaching Turkish to foreigners. Because reading books take language teaching out of the classroom and remove the space and time restrictions in language teaching and spread the process over the whole time. At the same time, the learner comprehends the aesthetic aspect of the language while learning the words on the basis of a context thanks to the reading books. Therefore, in this study, the Turkish Stories for Foreign Students Set, which consists of 20 books, 5 books at each language level, prepared for A1, A2, B1, B2 levels for the PIKTES, has been examined due to its mentioned quality and importance. It is aimed to determine the basic words, idioms, reduplications and viii proverbs in this set. In addition, in this study, it was also revealed which words were used differently and new at which level. Case study, one of the qualitative research designs, was used and the data were collected by document analysis. In the research, the frequencies of the words in the reading set were reached with the CIBAKAYA 2.3 program. As a result of the study, it has been determined that basic words are used more in reading books and a planned teaching purpose is pursued, idioms and reduplications are less frequent and a planned teaching purpose is not used, while proverbs are not included at all.
