The use of common formulic expressions in Turkish and Jordanian dialect and values education in teaching Turkish for foreigners

Due to historical association, cultural interaction and common religion, some common and similar formulaic language units (Proverbs, idioms, and formulaic expressions) have emerged. Some of these common and similar cultural elements have passed from Turkish to Jordanian Arabic and some of them have passed from Jordanian Arabic to Turkish. This study aims to underline the importance of formulaic expressions, idioms, and proverbs for values transferring in teaching Turkish for foreigners, as well as to find the Jordanian Arabic equivalents of these formulaic expressions, idioms, and proverbs. For this purpose, before the study, a literature review was made, and the values which are compiled from the directives of the Ministry of National Education were classified by finding common and similar formulaic language units from dictionaries, books, scientific articles, and theses. The proverbs and idioms in the book "Proverbs and Idioms Dictionary" of Ömer Asım Aksoy, which constitutes the data source of the study, and the formulaic expressions in the book "Formulaic Expressions in Turkish" by Hürriyet Gökdayı were compiled. Based on these compiled books, in order to determine the equivalent formulaic language units in Jordanian Arabic, 'Proverbs in Jordan' Hani Alamad's (1973) Thesis, Ahmad Azban's "Diwan Baladna" (2011) named book (Which contains Jordanian formulaic expressions, idioms and proverbs) and Rifa'at Alzghoul ve Riham Aleboud's (2016) "Proverbs Spoken in Jordan" named book have been also referenced. After determining the equivalent formulaic expressions, they were classified in accordance with a list in terms of the values they contain. In the study, content analysis was made with the document analysis method, which is one of the qualitative research methods. Common and similar formulaic language units were handled with an interpretative approach in terms of similarity type and closeness. In data collection, theses which are published in the thesis catalogue of the Council of Higher Education about the mentioned formulaic language units and values education, academic articles published in the national and international arena, papers published in symposiums, the Ministry of National Education Turkish Teaching Program and academic books on values education were examined and these resources were used. As a result of the analysis: 1,782 common / similar formulaic language units between Turkish-Jordanian Arabic were determined. The determined 205 proverbs were examined in terms of values. While patience and responsibility values were the most repeated values, patriotism was not encountered. The value of patience was determined 29 times, responsibility 28, justice 27, self-control 25, religious value 20, friendship 11, helpfulness 10, love 8, respect 6, honesty 3 and hospitality 3 times. However, patriotism value was not encountered at all. In terms of the values taken as a basis, 777 idioms were examined and the most common values among them were responsibility and self-control. self-control value was repeated 44, Responsibility 36, respect 19, love 18, religious value 15, patience 8, helpfulness 8, honesty 7, justice 5 times, patriotism 2 times, friendship 1 time and hospitality 1 time. From the compiled and based Turkish studies, 800 common and similar formulaic expressions with Jordanian Arabic were determined. After the formulaic expressions were determined, they were examined in terms of values, the religious value predominates. The value of patriotism was the least repeated value. Religious value was encountered 231 times, respect 79, love 36, patience 33, honesty 26, self-control 24, justice 12, hospitality 9, helpfulness 9, responsibility 8, friendship 4 and patriotism 3 times. As a result of the study, it was concluded that these formulaic language units are effective in transferring values and according to that, suggestions were made at the end of the study.
