Examination of teacher's views on artificial intelligence-based language models

In this research, the aim is to examine teacher opinions on AI-based language models. By conducting studies based on the views of teachers, who are stakeholders in education, the integration of artificial intelligence into education can be facilitated according to their opinions about AI applications. In this regard, the research is considered important. Additionally, this research is expected to contribute to the literature by providing qualitative data. The research utilizes a qualitative research method with a case study design. The study group consists of 11 classroom teachers working in six different primary schools affiliated with the center of Düzce during the spring semester of the 2022-2023 academic year. In this research conducted through the case study design, the opinions of teachers are examined. Within the scope of the research, the "Semi-Structured Interview Form" prepared by the researcher based on the opinions of a faculty member and seven teachers was used. In the data collection phase of the research, the convenience sampling method, one of the sampling types, was used, and semi-structured face-to-face interviews were conducted with eleven volunteer classroom teachers working in the six designated primary schools. Prior to the interviews, the participants' permissions were obtained, and the interviews were recorded using a voice recording device. In order to enhance the validity and reliability of the research, participants statements have been presented in the form of direct quotations, and to ensure participant confidentiality. Teachers participating in the study have been assigned a letter and number combination as codes. When looking at the findings reached within the scope of the research, it is observed that classroom teachers have limited knowledge about AI-based language models. Additionally, by taking into account the teachers' views, it is concluded that AI-based language models will provide advantages by saving time for students and teachers, but these applications also have disadvantages such as fostering laziness and ineffectiveness. Moreover, it is also observed that artificial intelligence will weaken interpersonal communication and affect individuals' social skills. Considering that teachers have limited knowledge about this technological tool that is expected to hold a significant place in the future, teachers can conduct research to improve themselves in this regard. Furthermore, when aiming for the widespread use of artificial intelligence in schools, teachers' awareness can be increased by providing in-service training and seminars about these programs to teachers.
