A reading attempt on Yaşar Kemal's novels from a geographical centered perspective

The geography which deals with human and spatial relations in various dimensions, synthesizing and establishing relationships is closely related to culture. The difference of the natural environment is reflected in the culture, and the culture affects both the natural environment and society, and it is affected by them. Since literature is a branch of art that reflects and sheds light on society. Furthermore, one of the important elements of literary texts is the space. Therefore, the traces of geography are seen in literary works. In their works, most authors and poets have included the geographic elements, culture and civilization characteristics of the society which they address. An author who included these elements in his works is also Yaşar Kemal. Yasar Kemal is one of the leading socialist authors of Turkish literature. Kemal, not only with his work but also with the conception of civilization which he put forward has an important place in the history of Turkish thought. One of the issues that Yaşar Kemal emphasizes the perception of civilization as a socialist author is a geography. The author especially focuses on the geography of Çukurova and illuminates the area around various issues. However, the geography he focuses on is more than a natural element, it is cultural geography with identity and integrity at the point of cultural and civilization. In this study, the novels of Yasar Kemal that are Other Face of the Mountain series, Story of Island series, The Legend of the Thousand Bulls, The Legend of Mount Ararat and Three Anatolian Legends as well as Bu Diyar Baştan Başa (interview series) were investigated with a geography-based reading based on the context of literature-geography/geography-human. This study has importance as it reveals how the author's ideas are nourished by geography and space, and how the relationship between literature and geography that inspired him.
