Özet (EN)

This thesis sets out to conduct an in-depth examination of the modern performance techniques that have emerged within the contemporary cello repertoire, reflecting the evolution of music over time. Since the latter half of the 20th century, cello performance has undergone significant transformations, particularly in terms of expressive capabilities. This change can be attributed to the innovative explorations of both composers and performers, who have sought to expand the boundaries of traditional performance practices. As a result, the cello repertoire has experienced a noteworthy shift, characterized by a diversification of technical approaches and interpretative styles. In this context, the technical diversity inherent in the performance of cello repertoire not only enhances the richness of sound production but also offers a broader interpretative framework. The contemporary cello repertoire encompasses a wide array of works that challenge performers and invite them to engage in a more profound exploration of musical expression. This thesis endeavors to provide a comprehensive analysis of the modern playing techniques found within this repertoire, thereby granting scholars and performers alike insights into the evolving landscape of cello performance. To achieve this aim, the research focuses on four significant works selected from the contemporary cello repertoire. These pieces were chosen based on their relevance and impact within the current musical landscape. An expert opinion form was developed to solicit feedback from cello educators regarding the selection process, ensuring that the chosen works are representative of both technical challenges and artistic merit. The selected works have been carefully considered not only for their musical content but also for the unique notational systems they employ and the technical challenges they present to performers. The techniques explored within this research transcend conventional bowing methods, encompassing a variety of modern bowing techniques that have become integral to contemporary cello performance. These include advanced left-hand pizzicato, which allows for novel sound production, as well as natural and artificial harmonics that add layers of complexity to the musical texture. Additionally, the study examines the use of glissando and tremolo, which serve as expressive tools that enhance the emotive power of the music. Furthermore, the research investigates the application of percussive effects on the instrument, which introduces an innovative auditory dimension to performances. These techniques not only enrich the sensory experience for the audience but also enhance the visual aspect of performance, creating a more engaging and immersive artistic presentation. Throughout the research process, a qualitative analysis methodology was employed. The selected works were subjected to document analysis in alignment with the overarching objectives of the thesis. This method enabled a thorough examination of the chosen pieces, leading to the identification of contemporary notational techniques and their implications for performance. The process involved creating a repertoire of works based on expert opinions, which served as a foundation for the analysis of technical challenges and interpretative strategies in contemporary cello performance. The findings derived from this research contribute to a deeper understanding of the technical challenges faced by performers, as well as the interpretative possibilities that arise from the use of modern techniques. These insights are crucial for educators and performers alike, as they provide a framework for developing pedagogical approaches that address the complexities of contemporary cello performance. Moreover, the thesis aims to articulate the technical transformation occurring within modern cello performance, highlighting the importance of a conscious and prepared approach to these evolving techniques. Ultimately, this thesis aspires to serve as a valuable resource for the fields of music education, performance, and research. By examining the contemporary cello repertoire and the associated modern performance techniques, the work seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the current state of cello performance practice. Additionally, it aims to lay the groundwork for future research that evaluates the impact of these findings on music education and the practice of contemporary cello performance. Through this endeavor, the thesis hopes to inspire further exploration and innovation within the realm of cello performance, fostering a continuous dialogue around the evolving nature of musical expression.
