Self-presentation and self-esteem in new communication environments: A research on generations

Social media, which has a great impact on daily life practices, has changed the way of communication, behavior and social perceptions of individuals, and has offered a new visibility area for the expression places of the households. Individuals feel the need to exist in this field in line with motives such as recognition, acceptance and approval, and they tend to present their self on social media platforms. In this sense, social media functions as an effective tool, offers individuals a wide audience and allows individuals to perform a more controlled self-presentation. The feedback received from the audience group has an impact on the self-esteem of the individual. Therefore, in this research, the relationship between self-esteem and self-presentation in social media will be discussed through X, Y, Z generations. The sample group of the research consists of 1155 people and includes social media users from X, Y, Z generations. The data related to the research were obtained by using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the Self-Presentation Tactics Scale. Frequency Analysis, T Test, Anova and Correlation Analysis were used to evaluate the obtained data. As a result of the research, it was concluded that there is a relationship between self-presentation and self-esteem. In addition, it has been determined that self-esteem and self-presentation on social media differ significantly according to generations.
