Abstract (EN)

Since the introduction of side-chain liquid crystalline polymers (SCLCPs) much effort hasbeen put in studying the effect of molecular architecture on their liquid crystalline properties.This arises as a result of their properties as materials in a range of advanced electro-opticaltechnologies. SCLCPs can be synthesized by low-molar mass liquid crystals.This study consist of the investigation of new side chain liquid crystalline homopolymers andcopolymers which were synthesized by free radical homopolymerization andcopolymerization with methylmethacrylate of Schiff base vinyl monomers with differentterminal groups, respectively. Liquid crystal behaviours of the polymers were studied.In the first step of the study, Schiff base vinyl monomers, having different terminal groupswere synthesized and their liquid crystal behaviours were studied. Secondly, new side chainliquid crystalline homopolymers and copolymers were synthesized by free radicalhomopolymerization and copolymerization with methylmethacrylate of Schiff base vinylmonomers with different terminal groups in the presence of AIBN as an initiator, respectively.Liquid crystal behaviours of the polymers were studied. Molecular weights of polymers werecalculated by Gel Permetion Chromatography (GPC) and polymers were characterized byProton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy. Thermal properties and mesogenicbehaviours were studied by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and PolarizationMicroscope (PM), respectively.Keywords: Liquid Crystals, Liquid Crystal Polymers, Schiff Bases, Salicylaldimines.
