The effect of Next Generation Science Standarts (NGSS) on 5th grade science education

It has undergone changes due to the changing times and the increasing need for qualified manpower when the changes made in science education programs on a country basis are examined. America, one of these countries, has created the "Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)", which was put forward with a long-term preliminary study. As a result of the implementation of NGSS in schools, it has been noticed that it has brought successful results in STEM application and international exams in America. When the literature in our country was examined, no research based on NGSS was found. The general problem of this study is; It is to evaluate the compatibility of the "New Generation Science Standards", which started in America and was created based on the development of STEM education around the world, with our country's education program. In the research, the pre-test post-test control group model, one of the experimental research models, was used in a quasi-experimental format. The study group of the research consists of 56 students studying in 5/A, 5/D, 5/E, 5/F classes of Cengiz Topel Secondary School in Finike district of Antalya province. The "Next Generation Science Standards Achievement Scale", which was created by combining the questions about the "Material and Properties" unit published in TIMSS 2015 and TIMSS 2019 and the questions taken from the acquisition comprehension tests published by the Ministry of National Education regarding "Material and Properties", was used as a data collection tool. The data was obtained by applying the success scale to both groups before and after the application. The obtained data were transferred to the statistical program and analyzed. In the study, data analysis was carried out with "Independent t-test", "Dependent t-test" and "Two-factor ANOVA" at the 0.05 significance level. As a result of the applications and analyses, it was concluded that there was a significant difference in academic success in teaching the subjects of the 5th Grade "Matter and Change" unit of the NGSS-based teaching strategy and that the difference obtained was positive in terms of increasing success.It is important to research "NGSS" and introduce it to the literature in order to increase the success rate in international exams in our country.
