Evaluation of the contents intended for education journalism on Turkey press within the framework of new right-wing politics

The subject of this study is to comparatively analyse of the approaches about education phenomenon and education journalism of the Cumhuriyet, Evrensel, Hürriyet, Milat, Milliyet and Ortadoğu newspapers which were chosen as example representing Turkey press within the framework of new right-wing politics. When semtinizing the mentioned newspapers' approaches related education area, the effects of the new right-wing politics applied after 1980 over education and media was especially taken into consideration. In addition, the analysis was performed on contents related education which were published on the chosen newspapers as example, between the dates of 1 January-31 December, 2016. In the study, education and journalism concepts were evaluated in the context of economics, political, and societal transformation that Turkey experienced along with 1980's. In this context, semtinizing of economy politics and societal background of emerging changes in the education area, evaluating of content features of education news and exhibiting of approach of Turkey press towards education journalism in particular with chosen newspapers as example, was formed the general framework of the study. Consequently, the comparative analysis of approaches related education journalism of the newspapers which were chosen as representing Turkey press constituted the problem of the study. In the study, quantitative and qualitative analysis methods were used. In the quantitative analysis part, frequencies of news, opinion column, article series, advertisements and advertisement news was exhibited. In the qualitative part, textual analysis of education contents published in the mentioned newspapers was executed. As a result, when taking economical, political and cultural variables into consideration; the reviewed newspapers's approaches towards education phenomenon and education journalism showed discrepancy in terms of ideological references and publication policy of newspapers. Besides, a considerable part of the chosen newspapers adopt a publication understanding which is similar to privatization, commercialization and commodification policies which were adopted in education area due to the fact that they prioritise circulation and profit. The most important evidence of this situation is advertisements and advertisement news which were intensely published in the papers of analyzed newspapers.
