Stylistics in the new Turkish Cinema

Abstract (EN)

When we consider style in terms of art, it is regarded as the way of specific formation, saying, perception and narration of an artist, a work, a period, a country or an age. Cinema which emerged upon the movement of the photographic images turned into a narration tool for stories and it provided human beings a new form of making meanings, perception and reception through adding the elements of movement and time to the story-telling. This form which is specific to cinema deals with how the components peculiar to the instrument composing a work, namely how a style is established. In Turkey, the transformation in the field of cinema which has gained international visibility beginning with mid-1990's and going on during 2000's was conceptualized as "New Turkish Cinema", "New Cinema of Turkey", "Independent Cinema" or "Cinema of Art" and it constituted a matter of research for numerous researchers with its various dimensions. The factor which discriminates this period from previous perceptions of cinema is its achievement in developing a specific approach different than previous ones. In this study, the films of a period which included the first competent examples of a new aesthetical approach in Turkish cinema were discussed in terms of their style. Within this context, the objective of this study is to determine the stylistic approaches in Turkish cinema and reveal the emerging similarities and differences in terms of style.
