New poverty and "older working poor" in labor market: The case of Antalya province

Abstract (EN)

The new poverty, which is increasingly concentrated in cities today, cannot be handled independently of the flexible and insecure nature of employment. The new poverty phenomenon draws attention with its deepening inequality and social exclusion mechanisms. In this context, the importance of employment conditions becomes even more evident. Not being involved in employment brings along social, cultural and spatial exclusion processes as well as income. In this context, new poverty is a phenomenon that should be handled in integrity with all its economic, social, cultural, emotional and cognitive dimensions. This thesis focuses on the forms and experiences of "old workers" in the labor market in the context of the new poverty phenomenon. The appearance of poverty makes the analysis of the issue important for the older as well. A state of fragility, which can be a return to chronological and biological age, causes poor older workers to make more effort to be involved in the labor market. Old age, which is articulated to the phenomenon of poverty, becomes stratified, leading to deeper elderly poverty. The reasons, forms and experiences of older workers in the labor market; It will provide an understanding of the new aspects of the experience of poverty and will enable the understanding of multiple deprivation situations, not just to meet basic needs. Focusing on the experiences of the older working poor; will reveal the signs of social problems created by multi-faceted vulnerabilities, the signs that fragility has become permanent, including the future, and it will enable multi-faceted thinking on the future fiction. To concentrate on the lives of older individuals who strive to exist in the labor market to cope with poverty in the context of poverty; it also reveals the views of working life and the social consequences of these processes. Hence, the aim of this study is the experiences of the older poor who strive for a place in the job market; It is tried to be understood in the context of "working conditions", "socioeconomic status", "solidarity networks", "worker poverty" and "older worker poverty". The study was conducted with individuals aged 50 and over who came to the Labor and Employment Agency (IŞKUR) in the Konyaaltı and Kepez districts of Antalya to seek work. In this context, in-depth interviews were conducted with thirty-three (33) men and thirteen (13) women, in total forty-six (46) people. Findings obtained within the scope of the research; show that the main causes of older working poverty are unemployment, inadequate income, and age discrimination.
