Investigation of neonatal and pediatric intensive care nurses' knowledge and attitudes towards pressure injuries due to medical devices in terms of some variables

Aim: Pressure injuries caused by medical devices represent a significant health issue, particularly in intensive care patients, and nurses' level of knowledge and attitudes toward this issue play a critical role in the prevention of such injuries. This study aims to examine the knowledge and attitudes of nurses working in neonatal and pediatric intensive care units regarding medical device–related pressure injuries (MDRPIs), in terms of variables such as age, professional experience, and educational background. Method: This descriptive study was conducted using an online survey method. Data were collected between January and May 2025 via Google Forms, with the participation of 91 nurses. The data collection tools included the Personal Information Form, the Medical Device–Related Pressure Injuries Knowledge Questionnaire, and the Attitudes Toward Medical Device–Related Pressure Injuries Questionnaire. Results: The results indicated that there were meaningful differences between nurses' demographic characteristics and their knowledge levels, as well as among the subdimensions of the scales (p<0.05). Moreover, a positive and statistically significant correlation was identified between knowledge level and attitude. Specifically, knowledge level was positively associated with preventive attitude (r=0.264), care-related attitude (r=0.416), and overall attitude (r=0.355), all of which showed notable relevance (p<0.05). Conclusion: Nurses' knowledge regarding medical device–related pressure injuries was found to be generally moderate, while their attitudes were positive. Factors such as educational background, professional experience, and participation in in-service training had a notable impact on knowledge levels. Despite the nurses' positive attitudes, the findings indicate that knowledge gaps persist and that knowledge plays a key role in shaping attitudes.
