Abstract (EN)

Green innovations contribute to environmental sustainability by minimizing environmental pollution, decreasing resource use, and increasing energy efficiency. Therefore, in order to achieve environmentally sustainable economic growth, it is vital to embed green innovations into industrial processes. Despite its importance, there are relatively small numbers of studies in the literature that empirically examine the effects of green innovations on manufacturing performance. Moreover, there is no consensus in the existing literature on whether green innovations positively or negatively affect manufacturing productivity. Therefore, this thesis aims to extend the empirical research on the effects of green innovations on manufacturing productivity. To this end, data on green innovation and manufacturing productivity for seventeen OECD countries over the period between 1990 and 2016 is analyzed. Both panel VECM/VAR and time series Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) methodologies are employed. Results of panel data analyses suggest that green innovations have in most cases a negative and statistically significant effect on manufacturing productivity. Moreover, according to results of the time series analysis on data of individual countries, while for most countries the effect is insignificant, we found evidence on significant effects of green innovation on manufacturing productivity for Japan, Germany, Italy, and France.
