The relationship between social media addiction, body image, self-esteem and emotional status in adult individuals

Abstract (EN)
The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between social media addiction, body image, self-esteem and emotional status in adult individuals. A total of 321 (222 female and 99 male) participants between the ages of 18-65 and living in various provinces of Turkey were included in this study. Personal information form, Social Media Addiction Scale, Social Appearance Anxiety Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and Positive and Negative Mood Scale were applied to collect data in the research. The obtained data were evaluated with the help of SPSS 25.0 statistical program. In the study, it was found that the participants were generally satisfied with their physical appearance. According to the research, social appearance anxiety is less than medium level and self-perception level is higher in adults. In addition, it was found that positive mood was moderate and negative mood was low in adults. With the increase in social media addiction levels, social appearance anxiety and negative mood increase in adult individuals; self-esteem and positive mood levels decrease. As social appearance anxiety increases in individuals, negative mood also increases, and accordingly, the level of self-esteem and positive mood decreases. According to the regression analysis findings, self-esteem, social appearance anxiety and mood levels; social appearance anxiety is predicted by virtual communication and negative mood, and social media addiction is predicted by social appearance anxiety, self-esteem and negative mood.
