Evaluation of our surgical treatment results with intramedullary radius ulna nails in adult forearm fractures – Retrospective study

Evaluation of Our Surgical Treatment Results with Intramedullary Radius Ulna Nails in Adult Forearm Fractures – Retrospective Study Forearm fractures, if proper treatment is not applied, there may be permanent loss of function in the upper extremity. The main goal in the treatment of forearm fractures is to prevent functional loss. Many methods such as closed reduction and plastering, external fixators, intramedullary nails and open reduction and internal fixation are used in the treatment. Providing fixation and anatomical reduction after treatment is an important factor affecting the success of the treatment. In this study, intramedullary radius ulna nailing results of 50 patients who applied to Fırat University Faculty of Medicine Orthopedics and Traumatology clinic between January 2015 and December 2019 due to an open forearm fracture were examined retrospectively. 36 of the patients were male, 14 were female and the mean age was 36.1 ± 16.8. Patients with a median follow-up time of 56 (48-120) weeks were followed up for postoperative functionality and union status. The median of DASH score of the patients was calculated as 5.8 (3.3-38.8). According to Grace Eversman evaluation criteria; the results were excellent in 41 patients (82%), good in 8 patients (16%) and acceptable in 1 patient (2%). According to Anderson criteria; excellent results were obtained in 47 patients (94%) and good results in 3 (6%) patients. Boiling rates were 100%. As a result; Among the advantages of the intramedullary nail fixing method, the need for exposure is small, the operation time is short, the risk of infection is low, it can be performed closed, being cosmetically suitable, having a short immobilization period, low periosteal stripping, having good fixation and high stability, low complication, high boiling rates, no need for implant removal. For this reason, it was concluded that intramedullary nail fixation applications are a reliable treatment method in the adult age group and constitute an alternative to other surgical treatments.
