Examining the mediating role of stress coping styles in the relationship between dating violence and childhood trauma in adults (18-45 years)

Dating violence negatively affects individuals in terms of both their physical and psychological health. Dating violence, one of the most common forms of violence, has devastating effects on society as well as on the individual. This study examines the mediating role of coping styles in the relationship between dating violence and childhood trauma among young adults aged 18–45. After obtaining ethical permission and the necessary permissions for the use of the informed consent form, demographic information form, dating violence attitude scale, childhood trauma scale, and stress coping styles scale used as data collection tools in the study, 360 volunteer participants between the ages of 18-45 were included in the study. The data obtained from the research were subjected to variance analysis using the Anova test. In parametric tests, when variances are not homogeneously distributed, Welch test results are taken as basis. In multiple comparisons of groups found to be significant as a result of the Anova test, Tukey or Tamhane tests were applied according to variance homogeneity. The mediating role of stress coping styles in the relationship between dating violence and childhood traumas was evaluated based on Hayes' model 4 results. According to the results; The mediating role of coping with stress styles in the relationship between dating violence and childhood traumas was determined; the mediating effect of seeking social support was significant (β=-0.74, 95% CI [-0.88/-0.61]), the mediating effect of self-confident approach was significant (β=-0.69, 95% CI [-0.82/-0.51]), ix the mediating effect of optimistic approach was significant (β=-0.76, 95% CI [-0.91/-0.61]), the mediating effect of helpless approach was significant (β=-0.69, 95% CI [-0.83/-0.56]), and the mediating effect of submissive approach was significant (β=-0.68, 95% CI [-0.82/-0.54]).
