Abstract (EN)

Studying the interpretation of the Quran is one of the most important and significant fields of study, and contemporary interpreters are among the most esteemed individuals. Therefore the study of Quranic interpretation and the interpreters is a legitimate demand. This research is titled "Studies in the Qur'an and interpretation in East Africa in the Twentieth Century [Kenya, Tanzania and Somalia – A Case Study]". The researcher has attempted to find answers to the following questions: Are there any exegetes in East Africa who have written exegesis books in their own languages or translated the Quran and recorded it using modern technological tools? The researcher claims that there are scholars and Quran researchers who have emerged from East Africa and in the study they have extensively examined the lives of these scholars and their work in this field. One of the most important findings of the researcher is that the school of Quranic interpretation in the East African region has made significant contributions. However it has not received significant attention from writters and researchers in East Africa. Scholars in East Africa have shown interest in Quranic interpretation in the mosques, and distinguished individuals who interpreted the Quran in Swahili have emerged from these mosques, such as Abdullahi Al- Farsi, Ali bin Muhsin Al- Barwani and others. This research is important primarily due to the significant role that studies on the primary source of Islam, the Quran play in shaping the religious life of societies and countries. Therefore in the contemporary era it is necessary to be aware of the exegetes in East Africa, those who translate the Quran into local languages and their methods of interpretation along with their other efforts. This research is a humble contribution to this subject. This research consists of four sections. The introduction section focuses on the importance, purpose and methodology of the study. The first section provides general information about East Africa and discusses the origins and dissemination of the exegesis (Tafsir) studies in this region. In the second section, a brief overview of Kenya is presented, along with information about the Kenyan exegetes, translations, commentaries and their methods. The third section discusses the exegetes in Somalia, their translations, commentaries and methods, while also providing a brief description of Somalia. In the fourth section, after providing general information about Tanzania, the focus was on the exegetes in this region and their authored commentaries and translations of the Quran. In the conclusion section, various results and recommendations regarding the research topic have been provided.
