Social exclusion of children growing in the poor family: The case of Çorum

Social exclusion is a common condition in childhood. The exclusion experienced in childhood has negative effects on the person both in childhood and in adulthood. The concept of social exclusion is not discussed much in the context of the effects on children's lives. It can be said that the main reason of this situation is that the concept was firstly derived from the exclusion from labor markets. For this reason, the characteristics of social exclusion in the literature have been adult oriented. The aim of the study is try to draw a general picture by revealing the experiences of social exclusion of the children living under the minimum income level and having a certain poverty level in Çorum province. In this direction, the study was carried out on 30 people of school age ranging from 6 to 18 living in the central district of Çorum and having an income under minimum income. The data were collected with social exclusion scale developed by Yitzhak Berman and David Phillips (Berman and Phillips, 2000: 334) and the Ridge (2002). The case study method used in qualitative research is adopted in the study. In-depth interview technique is used with interview forms prepared for the purposes of the study. According to the findings, it is observed that children experience social exclusion differently than adults. As a result of the study, suggestions for developing social inclusion policies for children were presented.
