Poverty and poverty reduction methods: A research on less developed countries

Today, poverty is at the head of the most important problems that humanity has to confront and which are felt in global dimensions. Today, around eighty-thirty million people around the world are trying to maintain their lives with an income below $ 1.25 a day. Poverty is, of course, not simply represented by income. In addition, criteria such as health, education and infrastructure are used to identify and define poverty. Poverty has more than one definition. The World Bank defines poverty as fragility, vulnerability, lack of right, lack of power, while famous economist Amartya Sen has expressed the lack of opportunities, options and feasibility. Poverty reduction methods as well as the definition of poverty need to be emphasized. In this sense, the World Bank (WB) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) are the leading institutions that have adopted the principle of reducing global poverty. In this thesis, methods of poverty reduction, policies and supports implemented by the World Bank and the United Nations Development Program have been examined in the context of poverty reports and data published by these organizations. This report and the changes in poverty reduction policies in the light of the data were evaluated and it was researched how the aid and methods applied affected the poverty in Less Developed Countries in particular. In addition, poverty data from the categories of income, food, health, education in Less Developed Countries were given, and performances of achieving the Millennium Development Goals are examined.
